senior project progress

Finally down to my last quarter of school!! For my senior project I wanted to do something based on my heritage since I'm not actually very knowledgable about it, so I'm developing art for a story set in a Korean village! I'm really excited for it 'v'

The protagonist is the timid young daughter of a guardian that tends to a garden of flowers, where each flower represents a villager's soul. When the guardian and garden are infected by a fungus, it's up to the daughter to restore purity to her mother and the flowers. I took the idea for the garden from Igong from Korean mythology and tried to write my own story around it to give it some depth. So far I've drawn turnarounds and expressions/actions sheets for the most important characters.

Preliminary sketches of the protagonist (who was projected to be MUCH younger initially) and the guardian. I named the little girl Seung-hwa/승화... I'm not familiar with the aesthetics of Korean names, I just looked up two meaningful characters formed a name with them?? I hope it doesn't sound weird

Final designs for Seung-hwa, the guardian, and the infected guardian. If you notice some differences in design between the turnarounds and expressions/actions sheets, it's because I applied some suggestions I received from critique.

oh where did these come from

These are from winter quarter and I never shared them. Prop designs for Osiris and the snake charmer for my concept art class. I'm posting these mostly for Osiris' staff--I liked its design the most and it shows where I pulled inspiration from it when I was designing his boat in my last post.

fruits of finals

We just finished our winter quarter here at SCAD! These are my final projects for Concept Illustration and Visual Storytelling II. I wasn't able to achieve the level of finished/polish that I envisioned for these pieces, but they're digestible at least. I may go back and flesh out the backgrounds in my Vis II comic later though. It's the most fun story I've drawn so I really want it to look its best!

exterior environments

Exterior environment designs for my Ancient Egyptian concept. Cell-shading is what I'm comfortable with, but I'd really like to explore digital painting so I gave it a try with these! The underworld temple and an oasis.

Unrelated to this assignment, but here's my first stab at digitally painting an environment of any kind. This was one done last year and is a lot rougher because it was just practice for fun. These compositions are looking pretty similar to each other...... what have I done

i wish i still owned the prince of egypt

I created a story set in ancient Egypt with a fantastical spin on it for my concept illustration class. Basically Anubis abandons his responsibilities as a god and turns into a human, goes on human adventures while Osiris tries to bring back Anubis to his underworldly duties, and Anubis gets with a pretty snake charmer who secretly plots to replace and abuse Anubis' position as a god. did you get all that

the puzzle box

Finals are over! REJOICE. Have a 3-page comic I did for my Advanced Inking class. I haven't drawn a comic in plain black-and-white since my first year at SCAD?? I've always used halftones in my work from then on to make up for the fact that I'm awful at spotting blacks, which might be apparent in these pages l': This was definitely a challenge.

the golden fortune cookie

I've really been neglecting this blog, whoops. But I'm back with a comic! The catch is that this is actually from back in March, so it's a bit old. It was my final assignment for Visual Storytelling I, the longest comic I've drawn to date at 10 pages. I'm reluctantly posting this here 5 months later because it was drawn within a tight schedule and suffers from a lot of rushed decision-making, yikes... I hope it's still an enjoyable read! I had a ton of fun brainstorming ideas for the story with my classmates! Thanks to my pals Brian, Rachel, and Russell for scheming with me hehe

"haha slapping ice so cool"

This was the final for my Creature Design course! I've been calling the animals on the first page beaverphants, which were made for a previous project in the class.

hourly comics

I attempted drawing hourly comics on Saturday, but after 5PM I figured I'd be working on schoolwork into the wee hours of the night, so I just stopped there...

props

I made up a story about two opposing graffiti gangs in the sort-of future and designed some props for them.

Have you ever heard of strength shoes? They look kind of ridiculous.

vehicle practice

I designed a food truck and cruise ship for my Environments, Weapons, and Props class! This course is really challenging me to give greater consideration and thought to those areas. Environments and objects should display character too!

S-U-G-A-R, jump into your racing car

I finally saw Wreck-It-Ralph on Friday! It really feels like I'm the last person on the planet to have seen the film because practically everyone I know has watched it already... multiple times. weeps
I loved it! There was a lot more depth to the story than I anticipated. My only gripe about the movie is that some of the dialogue could've been left out. It was kind of hard to sit through at times just because of how unnatural it felt? I mean hey let's get back to looking at pichurs

I saw several artists on tumblr draw themselves as Sugar Rush characters and I wanted to do it too 'v' I had a blast with this!

Don't get left in her cinnamon dust :U

I'm kind of glad I'm not an animator

I finished my self-portrait animation! The quality dropped considerably when I uploaded it onto YouTube which kind of sucks. Quality aside, I hope someone gets a kick out of it.

Animation is super cool, but it's a lot of work! I'm happy sticking with storyboards and other pre-production stuff.

I should be working on a project, but...

Haven't used my Pentel Pocket Brush Pen in a while, so I made Mia and Godot from Ace Attorney as my guinea pigs. Ace Attorney is my all-time favorite DS game! It's probably had the most profound influence on my art than anything else.

What better way to illustrate impatience than through a character whose head is literally a bomb with a fuse...

Every once in a while I have this urge to draw Speed Racer. I loved the anime as a kid and I liked the live-action movie that came out several years ago! To be fair it's kind of really lame, but I am actually 6 years old and do not care
